Navarathri - Festival for Nine Nights

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganapathi Bappa Maurya - the god with the face of an elephant most commonly known as Ganesha is i guess every ones favorite (no hard feelinbg against other Gods and Goddesses).
Well it definitely is mine and my daughters favorite.
Back in India i remember people celebrating this festival in homes as well as in big mantaps built by then in their respective neighborhoods.
As a kid it was always fun to go visit each mantap to see my fav Ganesha.......while i remember that i feel sad as my kids are missing all that fun.
So this time i decided to keep a idol of Ganesha at home and thought will give my daughter all that fun she has been missing. This not only gave me satisfaction but also Little Princess had fun decorating and was anxiously waiting when mom would finish pooja and she will get to eat all the goodies. The toleration was beyond her limitations so she even tried to peck in but how could she manage to do that as mom was watching her like a hawk.
But in the corner of my heart i felt so pavam for her i had to hurry up my pooja so she would not peck in again.
Last but not least i was happy she was happy and dad was surprised with all the cooking and the decoration we had done.

Krishna Jayanthi

Krishna Jayanthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Shri Krishna. Lord Shri Krishna was born on the ‘Rohini’ nakshatram (star) on Ashtami day. The festival Sri Krishna Jayanti is also known as Gokulashtami and Janmashtami. Sri Krishna is Lord Vishnu’s eighth avatar (incarnation) on earth. He is considered to be the Lord’s most glorious incarnations.

People offer sweets, savories and most importantly butter as neivedhyam as these happen to be Lord Shri Krishna's favourites. Women adorn their homes with beautiful Kolams and little feet drawn on the floors to show the foot steps of Little krishna entering in to our homes. Special pooja is performed with flowers and neivedhyam is offered late in the evening after the moon risea as Lord Shri Krishna was born late evening.

Well this is the first time i am celebrating Krishna Jayanthi at a large scale as i have a reason and my attempt to it i should as was not bad. Despite it being a lot of work for a first timer i pulled it out in a pretty neat way.

Most of all again my Little Princess was the happiest person coz she gets her princess dress ( this time she wore ghagra choli - depicting little Radha.........she looked choooooooo cute) and how can i forget to mention she did get to eat all the goodies too. This time dad joined in as it happens to his Star Birthday...............So............Happy Birthday Dad!!!!!!

VaraMahaLakshmi Pooja

VaraMahaLakshmi Pooja is performed by many women in the southern India mainly in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated on the last Friday of the month of Ashada, also called Adi corresponding to the months July-August of English calendar.

Eight forces...

Siri (Wealth), Bhu (Earth), Saraswati (learning), Preethi (love), Keerthi (Fame), Shanthi (Peace), Tushti (Pleasure) and Pushti (Strength) represent a Lakshmi together they are called AshtaLakshmi.

We decorated the Kalasam with Silk saree, Jewelery, Flowers and Money. Prepared a lot of delicious food to offer to goddess Lakshmi.

Anjali (my princess) also wanted to be decorated (her word

for dressing up) like Goddess Lakshmi so she wore her pretty dress (Princess dress) and was ready to receive guests whom i had invited over the evening for tea and snacks.

Overall it was a nice festival celebrated and my daughter had nice fun she enjoyed decorating the Kalasam and then eating all the snacks.

Kids make you think so much

The inspiration behind starting this blog came from the thought that came to me in 2009...........which is to "TEACH MY KIDS INDIAN CULTURE". This is coz they are born in the USA and hardly see and learn our culture. I have two angels a girl and boy. I mainly wanted my Little Princess who is now going to be 4 soon get familiar with our culture. Next .....after a couple of years it will be her Little brothers time as he is just a newborn now :)
After a long thinking of where do i start? and how do i start?
An idea popped in my mind........Yes, start with festivals........it make learn culture and at the same time its a fun day celebrating it.
Guess what ........ with this idea in my mind i ended up celebrating every festival in our Hindu calendar or should i say all major festival in the Hindu calendar.
